{"id":2141,"date":"2021-03-18T10:57:15","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T10:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hrteam.ie\/?p=2141"},"modified":"2022-09-30T10:58:36","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T09:58:36","slug":"employers-urged-to-prepare-for-parents-leave-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hrteamservices.com\/en\/employers-urged-to-prepare-for-parents-leave-increase\/","title":{"rendered":"Employers Urged To Prepare For Parent\u2019s Leave Increase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parent\u2019s leave is to increase from two to five weeks and will apply to both parents and adoptive parents under new legislation which comes into effect in April 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HR Team Director, Martina McAuley, said: \u201cParents in Ireland will be able to take the five weeks of leave at any time within the first two years after a child\u2019s birth or adoption instead of in the one-year period that was previously provided for in the Parent\u2019s Leave and Benefit Act 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe new legislation means it is now time for employers in Ireland to establish new policies and procedures, or review their existing ones to ensure employment law compliance,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new law will have benefits for both employees and employers, Ms McAuley said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe increase of\u00a0parent\u2019s leave\u00a0entitlement from\u00a02 weeks to 5 weeks\u00a0will enable employers to retain a more diverse workforce, thus aiding gender diversity and work-life balance. Particularly, those employees with childcare responsibilities will benefit from this increase in leave entitlement. It may also enable employers to more effectively manage employees during the current pandemic, as the use of this type of family leave can be used where necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4536 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hrteamservices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Parental-Leave-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Parental Leave\" width=\"447\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hrteamservices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Parental-Leave-200x113.jpg 200w, https:\/\/hrteamservices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Parental-Leave-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hrteamservices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Parental-Leave-400x226.jpg 400w, https:\/\/hrteamservices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Parental-Leave.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Employers advised to update Parent\u2019s Leave policy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEmployers are advised to update their leave policies; in particular their \u2018parent\u2019s leave\u2019 policy and procedure,\u201d Ms McAuley said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe policy and procedure should be written &#8211; ideally in an employee handbook &#8211; so that employees have direct access and can fully understand their obligations surrounding how to notify their employer that they wish to book the leave and the associated timeframes. Employees should also be fully informed of the eligibility criteria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is recommended that employers be prepared well in advance to deal with any applications that will arise. It is essential to have established all the answers to potential questions employees may pose by ensuring that your policies and procedures on parent\u2019s leave are entirely up to date and then clearly communicated to all employees,\u201d Ms McAuley added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Family Leave Bill,\u00a0introduced by Minister for Children Roderic O\u2019Gorman,\u00a0will apply to both parents, as well as adoptive parents, is aimed at achieving an improved work-life balance for all parents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Minister said: \u201cThe extension to parent\u2019s leave and benefit is intended to provide them with an additional period of leave to spend with their child. An important facet of parent\u2019s leave is to encourage the sharing of childcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the new legislation, adoptive couples can decide which parent takes up the twenty-four weeks leave, and paves the way for gender equality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ms McAuley added: \u201cParent\u2019s leave can be taken as one continuous period of 2 weeks leave or periods of not less than one week.\u00a0Employers should receive at least six weeks\u2019 notice of an employee\u2019s intention to take the
